Joe Rautenstrauch is in his fourth season on the Canisius coaching staff after a standout career with the Griffs, serving as the team’s defensive coordinator.
During his first season in charge of the defense, Ratuenstrauch mentored a young unit in 2016 that lowered its scoring defense, while also producing two MAAC All-Rookie Team selections in Logan Monroe and Michael Sanzone.
In his first two seasons on the Canisius sideline, Rautenstrauch worked directly with the team’s faceoff unit and goaltenders. Under his watch, Tim Edwards led all players in the MAAC in faceoff percentage during both the 2014 and 2015 campaigns, ranking eighth nationally as a junior with a 61.1 percent mark. He also oversaw Alex Govenettio’s successful junior season in net where he increased his save percentage by 11.1 percent during the 2014 campaign.
A Buffalo native, Rautenstrauch enjoyed a breakout season at Canisius during his senior campaign in 2013. He played in all 13 games and ranked second on the team with 27 points on 18 goals and nine assists. Primarily a defensive midfielder during his first three seasons at the College, Rautenstrauch appeared in 39 career games with 32 points, 18 goals, 14 assists and 63 ground balls, helping lead the Griffs to the MAAC Championship in 2012.
